Hi Everyone,
I apologize for not posting recently. I need to make more of an effort to post information about my segments!
The last segment I did on "Raising Children Right" is on Emotional Intelligence. Here is a video clip: http://cbs11tv.com/video/?id=51332@ktvt.dayport.com
Basically, it's learning to help your child manage ALL of their emotions, especially the negative ones. This is when it can be more challenging. For example, your child may get upset and throw something across the family room and break a lamp. Of course, you need to let them know that this is not okay. (setting limits and boundaries) The next step is to validate their emotions. They still need to have a consequence if they displayed inappropriate behavior. However, teaching them how to handle their negative emotions in the future is key. Talk with them about alternatives to throwing something in the house. How can they "let go" of some of their negative emotions such as anger in a healthy way? Let them be involved in this process but make sure they know of a solution for next time. This is how we can raise an emotionally intelligent child. To learn more, read John Gottman's book, "Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child". This is a great book!
Please email me at drninalpc@aol.com if you have any questions.
Best,
Dr. Nina
